Objetivos
The general objective of this course unit is to introduce the basic concepts of matrix calculation and functions of a real variable, developing the ability to work as a team and the students' autonomy in solving problems in the context of the syllabus of this curricular unit.
Resultados de aprendizagem e competências
By the end of term time, students should be able to:
- Identify the different types of matrices and perform elementary operations.
- Infer the possibility and perform algebraic operations between matrices.
- Solve systems of linear equations by applying the Gauss elimination method.
- Identify a function of a real variable and recognize the elementary mathematical functions.
- Analyse the properties of a function of a real variable.
- Perform operations with elementary mathematical functions.

Métodos de ensino e atividades de aprendizagem
The teaching methodology used in this curricular unit is based on the application of several active learning techniques aiming at greater student involvement and autonomy in the construction of knowledge about the proposed topics. Students learn to work their resources in the process of reflection on the contents, making the acquisition of skills in the exercise of learning activities. One of the most recurrent pedagogical techniques, among others, will consist in the progressive exploitation of collaborative working group in solving proposed exercises, which promotes the student's autonomy, the application of critical capacity and self-assessment.

The approval in this UC (curricular unit) can be obtained through two assessment processes: Continuous Evaluation or Exam Evaluation.
CONTINUOUS EVALUATIONThe Continuous Evaluation presupposes the accomplishment of:
- a regular attendance of at least 75% of the classes for freshmen students;
- formative assessment (AF), graded from zero to 8 values (rounded to tenths), consisting of 3 training tests (with multiple-choice questions), one oral test and peer review;
- summative assessment, which consists of 2 summative tests, MT1 and MT2 (with open questions), graded from zero to 6 values (rounded to tenths).
The final classification CF (rounded to units) will be the sum of the grades of the formative assessment and the 2 summative tests.
If CF is equal or higher than 10, the student is approved with rank equal to CF, provided that the grade in any of the summative tests is equal or higher than 2.0.
EVALUATION BY EXAMStudents who have not obtained approval for Continuous Assessment may take an exam, being approved as long as they obtain a grade of 10 or higher.
If the final classification is greater than or equal to 18 values, the student must carried out an oral test, obtaining as a final grade the average of the classifications of the written test and of the said oral test. If the student does not attend the oral test, the final classification will be 17 values.
Fórmula de cálculo da classificação final
CF = AF + MT1 + MT2

Avaliação especial (TE, DA, ...)
Working students, high-level athletes, association leaders and students under the Religious Freedom Law must address, until the second academic week of the semester, to the head of the Curricular Unit to present their pertinent specificities, in accordance with the terms of the respective diplomas under penalty of failure to enforce them for lack of objective conditions.
Melhoria de classificação
In this course unit passed students of this academic year may only apply to their improvement classification in the supplementary period exam.
Observações
- Each training test shall be of 30 minutes, with students being encouraged to achieve 70% of the total score.
- Each summative test shall be of 60 minutes, with minimum score of 2.0.
- The exam shall be of 2 hours and 30 minutes.
- Handling or displaying any electronic equipment is prohibited, except school calculators (non-graphing).
- Assessment tests and exams are individual and therefore any type of communication or consultation with third parties during its performance is expressly prohibited, with the exception of the teacher who will be monitoring them.
- Whenever an act of fraud is detected during assessment tests or exams carried out face-to-face or remotely, it will be overturned and the student will be subject to the application of the IPS student disciplinary regulation.
