Objetivos

The main objective of this course is that students acquire the required abilities to carry out the solution design, development and implementation of a Smart City system, and the skills for project management and planning, and for teamwork coordination.

 Students who conclude the course should be able to:

 - Explain the integrated and multidisciplinary approach to IoT solutions, and the challenges to overcome;

- Know the various areas of action that integrate smart cities and the most common applications;

- Analyse, project and implement an IoT System in the context of Smart Cities, considering its components and the issues of connectivity and security;

 - Plan and manage a project;

 - Work in teams.

Resultados de aprendizagem e competências

The IoT architecture, components and challenges program contents give the students the knowledge of the integrated and multidisciplinary approach of IoT generic solutions, as well as the principles of sensing/actuation, data transmission and processing, visualisation and analysis, and security issues associated with IoT.

The Smart Cities infrastructure elements allows gaining insight into the various areas of operation in smart cities and the most common applications.

The implementation of an IoT system in the context of Smart Cities gives the students skills in the analysis of requirements, solutions design, development and system implementation considering acquisition/control at sensor nodes level, interconnection through wired/wireless networks and IoT platforms/DB servers support for recording and processing the collected data.

The planning and project management and team coordination/participation aspects will be also developed throughout the project execution.

  1. Architecture and evolution of the Internet of Things (IoT). Applications examples.

  2. Most common communication networks and devices.

  3. Protocols used in IoT (MQTT, CoAP, ...).

  4. IoT Plataforms and application services made available.

  5. Smart cities infrastructure elements: water, energy and waste management, urban mobility, citizen services, e-governance and citizen services.

  6. Requirements analysis, design and implementation of an IoT system.

  7. Planning and project management.

Métodos de ensino e atividades de aprendizagem

The teaching methodology is based on active learning techniques where students develop critical thinking, research and group work skills, execution of technical reports, presentations and oral discussions.

Students should select one of the infrastructure elements of the Smart Cities and carry out a research work, which will be discussed among groups.

Students should propose a project in one of the areas that integrate Smart Cities, whose execution requires the use of acquired learning, until and during the current semester, as well new skills to acquire autonomously. The project will be executed by a team of students being coordinated by one teacher. The evaluation takes place in 3 phases:

  1. Elaboration and formal presentation of the research work;
  2. Elaboration and formal presentation of a pre-project with the analysis of requirements and the initial design of the solution. The proposal should present, among other aspects, technologies to be used and a system block diagram;
  3. Final report and formal presentation of the project developed.

The students elaborate a research work (TP), a pre-project (PP) and a final project (PF).

Gets approved the student that with  a minimmum  grade of 8.0 in each TP, PP e PF components and a minnimum final grade of 9.5.

Fórmula de cálculo da classificação final

The final grade (CF) is evaluated as:

CF=0.20 x TP + 0.20 x PP + 0.50 x PF + 0.10 x Classroom work

where:
TP - Research work;
PP - Pre-project;
PF - Final project.
