Objetivos
This Curricular Unit aims to develop in students the knowledge and understanding of technologies, architectures and services of transmission, fixed access (copper, cable and fiber optic pair) and mobile telecommunications networks, contributing to the acquisition of skills at the analysis, design, implementation and maintenance of telecommunication systems and services involving different systems and means of transmission, switching and access.Resultados de aprendizagem e competências

Introduction: Basic concepts about fixed and mobile telecommunication system, public and private telecommunication networks; historical evolution, convergence scenarios; communications sector.
Analog signal acquisition, signal modulation and encoding. Analog and digital modulation techniques. Digital encoding of voice, audio and video. Long-distance digital transmission: fiber optic systems; radio beam systems; satellite systems; systems with time division (TDM), frequency (FDM) and wavelength (WDM) multiplexing. Narrowband access networks, analogue telephone access, FWA.
Broadband access networks, xDSL digital accesses, fiber-coaxial (HFC) hybrid architectures; FWA access networks (LMDS), fiber optic access network FTTC, FTTB and FTTH – passive network architectures (PON), international standards (GPON);. Mobile Networks, general concepts of architecture, services and cellular planning, GSM, GPRS and UMTS.Bibliografia Obrigatória
