Objetivos
Students should be able to:
i) understand the basic characteristics of soils and the relevant classifications applicable;
ii) identify the mechanisms involved in soil compaction;
iii) understand the effects of water and its movement within the soil;
iv) understand and apply the concepts of effective stress and total stress in soil;
v) analyze the behavior of soils in relation to its deformability and strength.
Resultados de aprendizagem e competências

Métodos de ensino e atividades de aprendizagem
In the theoretical lectures subjects are exposed in slides by using informatic tools. Practical lessons emphasis is
placed on solving individual problems. The analysis of results seeks to stimulate critical thinking, the ability to
analyze similar situations and getting valuable experience. Laboratory lessons intend to put students in contact
with natural soil samples and after compaction samples, to highlight basic characteristics through testing and
induce determination of permeability, deformability and shear strength parameters. Promoting critical analysis and
interpretation of test results, using problem solving methodologies and Practice Based Research activities are
developed in laboratory environment.
