Docência - Responsabilidades
Língua de trabalho
Portuguese - Suitable for English-speaking students
Objetivos
It is intended that students would be able to:
- Understand the differences between open and closed loop control systems and to identify the sevreal components that may compose a control loop.
- Know the instrumentation used to control the most common process variables in biotechnological and chemical processes.
- Know the symbology used and know how to interpret process and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID).
- Analyze and characterize systems, based on their response in Laplace space and time.
- Understand the notions of stability of control systems.
- Understand the basic actions of Proportional (P), Integral (I) and Derivative (D) control and their influential performance and stability of a control chain.
- Know strategies of anticipatory control, ratio control, cascade control.
- Analyze systems and design controllers, using PID controller tuning rules.
Resultados de aprendizagem e competências
The syllabus of the curricular unit will be operated mainly by an expository methodology (theoretical classes) supported by problem-solving classes that allow to obtain skills about the basic concepts of Control Systems. The acquired knowledge must be consolidated by solving a relevant amount of exercises and practical problems, either by the teacher or by the student. The student assessment was designed to measure the extent to which competencies were acquired.Modo de trabalho

Programa
1. Typical instrumentation in biotechnological and chemical processes. P&I diagrams.
2. Mathematical modeling of physical systems: Differential equations. Examples of mathematical models for chemical processes. Transfer function. Block diagram reduction techniques.
3.Dynamic behaviour: time response of first order systems.
4.Scope of control, parts of a control system: the process, sensors, transmitters, controller and final control element.
5.Control system stability
6. PID Controllers: proportional, integral and differential elements. Effects on system response.

Métodos de ensino e atividades de aprendizagem
In the classes, fundamental concepts are exposed, using audio-visual techniques. Illustrative applications of these concepts are solved, stimulating rational thinking and fostering a more critical spirit amongst students. In these same classes the students also solve application exercises, individually and independently.Software

Fórmula de cálculo da classificação final
Evaluation:
a) Continuous
– 2 tests with 1.5hduration each and with minimum of 9.5 values (0 to 20 values). Each test has a 50% weight in the final evaluation.
b) By exam
– Final exam with a minimum of 9.5 values (0 to 20 values) and 100% weight in the final evaluation.Provas e trabalhos especiais
