It is intended that students would be able to:

  • Understand the differences between open and closed loop control systems and to identify the sevreal components that may compose a control loop.
  • Know the instrumentation used to control the most common process variables in biotechnological and chemical processes.
  • Know the symbology used and know how to interpret process and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID).
  • Analyze and characterize systems, based on their response in Laplace space and time.
  • Understand the notions of stability of control systems.
  • Understand the basic actions of Proportional (P), Integral (I) and Derivative (D) control and their influential performance and stability of a control chain.
  • Know strategies of anticipatory control, ratio control, cascade control.
  • Analyze systems and design controllers, using PID controller tuning rules.

Esta unidade curricular tem por objetivo que o estudante adquira competências na elaboração de um projeto de engenharia química, como a elaboração do diagrama do processo, a determinação de balanços de massa e de energia, a seleção e dimensionamento de equipamento, estimativa de caudais e características dos efluentes gerados, bem como os pontos de controlo do sistema de instrumentação. O estudante deverá ser igualmente capaz de realizar a análise de viabilidade económica e sensibilidade do projeto que elaborou e adquirir noções básicas sobre a avaliação de riscos industriais e planeamento de ações para a melhoria das condições de segurança das unidades industriais e das pessoas.
