Objetivos
The objective of this curricular unit is to transmit to the students the necessary knowledge and skill s to address and perform experimental work and to analyze the final results. This curricular unit allows the students to become familiar with practical applications of the theoretical concepts acquired in the other curricular units that work at the same time.

Programa
1. Continuous operation mode with an anaerobic digester, for the treatment of a residual water sample for biogas production and carbon removal.
2. Continuous operation mode with a 3 continuous stirred tank reactors (CSTR).
3. Comparison study of two types of continuous reactors a Plug Flow Reactor (PFR) and Fixed Bed Reactor (FBR) for the invertase enzymatic hydrolysis of sucrose in Saccharomyces bayanus cells immobilized in calcium alginate, pH 4.5 and 45 ºC. This practical activity, requires a preparation class (pump calibration, flow adjustment; experimental parameter determination and cell immobilization) and another session for the operation per se (substrate feed flow effect in the final conversion; determination of the minimum fluidized bed rate (FBR)).
4. Membrane process separation: ultrafiltration for biomass concentration. 5. Separation of biomolecules by ionic exchange chromatography (HPLC) in a given sample.

Fórmula de cálculo da classificação final
Continuous evaluation:
Final grade = 20% Laboratory Work + 20% regular exercises + 20% report 1 + 20% report 2 + 20% report 3
The submission of all assessment elements is mandatory.
Laboratory work and regular exercises are components of individual assessment and reports (1 to 3) are components of group assessment.
The evaluation criteria, and respective weights, of the laboratory work are: (1) student punctuality (10%), (2) demonstration of the previous preparation of the laboratory work, in the laboratory notebook (15%), (3) proactivity , organization, rigor and dexterity in the execution of the experimental work (50%) and (4) cleaning and organization of the space and material at the end of the class (25%).
Whenever a situation of plagiarism is detected in the written work, that work will be canceled.
Justification of the exception regime (100% Exam not applicable):
According to the UC file, the learning objective underlying the application of the Exception Regime includes the planning, execution and development of laboratory experiences through the rigorous handling of laboratory material and specific equipment.
According to the UC file, the skills to be acquired that underlie the application of the Exception Regime are as follows:
It is intended that students acquire knowledge and skills to carry out experimental work and analyze the results obtained. The objective of this UC is to provide students with the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the laboratory applications of theoretical concepts acquired in curricular units that take place during the same academic period.
Justification for the application of the exception regime:
The practical activities to be developed at UC Laboratories VB aim at the development of practical laboratory experiences and interpretation of results. The technical skills associated with carrying out these experiences imply the student's face-to-face involvement and continuous assessment of learning.
