Civil Engineering Seminars

CVN006 - ECTS This is an integrated course unit and preparation for the course and aims to provide a vision of what is the activity of a civil engineer and develop methodological skills essential to academic and professional performance. As general objectives, the familiarization of students with the activities that engineers perform and the various aspects and specificities of the acts of Civil Engineering. After completion of the unit course the students should be able to understand and formulate arguments and problems that civil engineers face in various aspects of its activity. The students should be also able to solve the problems, find and describe the most appropriate procedures for resolution, to make reports, to present the cases and draw conclusions.

Strength of Materials I

CVN017 - ECTS It is intended that the students acquire basic skills and knowledge in the field of Mechanics of Materials:(i) know the definition and physical meaning of the internal stress matrix components and the strain matrix components, as well as Hooke's law;(ii) know the physical meaning of Young modulus and Poission coefficient;(iii) evaluate strain and tension matrixes from results obtained with strain rosettes;(iv) evaluate stresses, strains and displacements in three-dimensional frame structures built by prismatic frames(homogeneous and heterogeneous) under axial forces and torsion. In particular, it is intended that students develop the ability to adapt to new situations and properly analyse the results.

Cartography

CVN009 - ECTS The student should be able to read, interpret and take measurements on topographical plans, to interpret the landforms, interpolate spot heights, determine slopes, profiling, calculating areas and volumes. The student must have notions of Geodesy and Cartography: natural coordinates, geodetic coordinates, methods of coordinate transformation, , national cartographic infrastructure, systems of national map projection. The student should know and use the topographic equipment (optical level, theodolite, GNSS equipment), and about the main methods of topographic positioning (leveling and coordinate transportation) should know and prepare a short topographic surveying. The student to know some notions of Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems.

General Hydraulics

CVN013 - ECTS
Students will discover the basic principles of Fluid Mechanics, and will comprehend its different applications in Hydraulics, most specifically in what civil engineering is concerned. With this discipline, students will be able to solve current hydraulic problems, namely in hydrostatics and circuits under pressure, to identify more complex problems that will require a specialized support, and to enroll a technical description of the problem with such a specialist. This discipline is complemented with Hydraulics II.
Students should develop their competences in work planning and team work. It is fundamental that they work on their reporting skills, mainly in writing, and that they improve their responsibility and commitment as far as deadlines are concerned. This curricular unit is a basic science for a civil engineer, so students must assure

Applied Hydraulics

CVN019 - ECTS The aim of the curricular unit is to introduce students to the urban water cycle and its infra-structures, in its quantity and quality aspects, including basic knowledge of water treatment. In this discipline, the student will complement the competences acquired in Hydraulics I and II and learn about procedures to solve real problems. Students will be able to perform engineering design of water supply and sewer systems and its interference with the water cycle. Students should develop their competences in work planning and team work. Work planning has a special emphasis in this curricular unit, as milestones are established all through the term. They should be able to research for contents on their own, in this area. They must understand all the possibilities there are for a civil engineer to intervene and when they should interact with other specialists. Students must assure their individual knowledge in the area.
