Unidades Curriculares

Building Conservation and Rehabilitation I

MEC043 - ECTS tudents should acquire basic knowledge in the domain of the conservation and rehabilitation of old buildings (i.e. before the advent of reinforced concrete), in order to enable them to: identify and describe the materials and the construction processes of old constructions, identify the damages and enumerate the probable causes of degradation, describe the different deterioration mechanisms, define the methodology of tests and inspections and analysis of an old structure, define the objectives of a rehabilitation intervention, select the appropriate rehabilitation techniques and specify the properties of the products and systems to be applied, regarding the requirements of the habitation rehabilitation, the principles for the analysis, conservation and structural restoration of old buildings and architectural heritage and the International Charters and Resolutions.

Structural Dynamics and Seismic Engineering

MEC115 - ECTS The main objective is to initiate students to the study of Structural Dynamics. Earthquake Engineering problems are studied based on previous knowledge. Basics of Seismic Engineering are revised in seismic structural response context. At the end of the course students will acquire the ability to perform seismic analysis of structures in the context of Eurocode 8.

Structural Mechanics

MEC134 - ECTS The subject of Structural Mechanics is presented here through a modern approach that, giving the student a global and integrated view of the formal and practical aspects of discretization, both direct and indirect, to make him able to develop discrete models for the various physical systems, whose solution requires the application of the finite element method. These physical systems will fundamentally focus on elasticity problems of linear elastic behaviour. In terms of plastic behaviour, the plastic limit analysis of frames and slabs is a good complement to the previous knoweledge. Finally, the geometrically nonlinear problems of frame structures are addressed. During the training, the student will also have the ability to verify modeling errors and other types of custom errors in applying the software.

Urban Waterworks

MEC135 - ECTS

The curricular unit of Urban Hydraulic Works aims to transmit specific knowledge in the areas of conception, design, and project of urban hydraulic structures and works. Advanced knowledge will also be transmitted in the field of urban river integration, of LIDs (Low Impact Devices), and other management measures, and of urban floods prevention and mitigation, thus enabling specific engineering knowledge in the field of urban floods.

Construction Economics and Quality Systems

MEC113 - ECTS - The concepts, evolution, general principles of quality, the SPQ and the state of the civil construction sector.

- Quality systems and documentation, their framework and applicability in the civil construction sector.

- The way of qualifying products, processes or systems of people and organizations.

- And systematically evaluate and plan a process or a system within the civil construction sector, integrating the principles, standards, methodologies and tools in the scope of quality.

- The concepts, evolution and principles of economics in construction, including demand and supply, macroeconomics and microeconomics, time value, financial statement and analysis of investment projects.

Reinforced and Prestressed Concrete I

MEC136 - ECTS It is intended that students become eligible for sizing of prestressed beams. Students must understand all procedures related to the security to the design limit states and service limit states of presstressed beams, including design and detail. Some basic knowledge about concrete structures are also revised to complement syllabus contents of Structural Concrete I (strut and tie models, punching shear and durability of concrete structures) and also intends to consolidate the knowledge about design of concrete columns and beams.

Building Conservation and Rehabilitation II

MEC046 - ECTS

Concerning reinforced concrete and steel structures, knowing thoroughly the properties of materials and corresponding deterioration mechanisms under external and internal actions. To have basic knowledge as regards the assessment of structures with the results of inspections. To know how to interpret inspection reports in order to allow identifying anomalies and their possible causes. To know thoroughly the relevant rehabilitation techniques used currently taking into account the materials, systems and methods. To implement o acquired knowledge to a practical case of rehabilitation project – RC or steel – identifying associated problems considering, with critical approach, several hypothetical solutions and/or an assembly of these. Introduction to the maintenance of structures

Steel and Composite Constructions

MEC168 - ECTS

Geotechnical Works

MEC116 - ECTS Consolidation and deepening of the knowledge acquired in the course units of Soil Mechanics, Foundations and Retaining Structures or Geotechnical Structures and application to various types of geotechnical works mainly on shallow and deep foundations.

Structural Project

MEC137 - ECTS The objetive of this course is to give basic training on reinforced concrete buildings design. Consolidate and aggregate formation in the areas of structures and concrete and empower its articulation with training in the
areas of construction, directing them to prepare a final product: the design of structures. Enabling the use of
software tools for structural analysis and computer aided design. Develop a critical spirit in relation to the
phases of development, including modeling and analysis and verification of results. Structuring and
representing information constituent of a project.

Materials Technology

MEC138 - ECTS

Transmitting knowledge related with the construction products directive. Provide scientific and technical expertise in the field of construction materials, including concrete, steel and aluminum, polymers, composite materials and new building materials, through the analysis of raw materials, processing techniques, properties and their evaluation, standardization and application in force. To provide students knowledge and skills related to trial activity/laboratory.

Dissertation, Project or Internship

MEC128 - ECTS The objetives of this course are:
- Gain knowledge in a specific area of Civil Engineering, through research, innovation or development of professional skills;
- Ability to integrate knowledge, handle complex issues, develop solutions and make judgments in situations of limited or incomplete information, including reflections on the implications and ethical and social responsibilities that result from those solutions and those judgments;
- Be able to communicate their findings, knowledge and reasoning underlying them, in a clear and unambiguous way.

In the curricular unit Internship / Project / Dissertation, the student may choose to develop a professional internship, a project or a conventional scientific dissertation. For any of these possibilities, the student shall submit an original report, specifically developed for this CU.

Sustainable Construction and Technological Innovation

MEC110 - ECTS

O estudante deverá ficar habilitado a:

- Implementar práticas de inovação tecnológica em exemplos reais;

- Implementar práticas de sustentabilidade na conceção, execução, manutenção e demolição de construções.

Como competências específicas considera-se:

- Transmitir informação, oral e escrita, de forma objetiva a interlocutores na área da engenharia, equacionando ideias e problemas;

- Garantir a qualidade dos projetos em que se envolve, consciente dos impactos associados: tecnológicos, económicos, sociais e ambientais;

- Formular soluções alternativas e/ou inovadoras;

- Elaborar propostas coerentes e consistentes.
