Objetivos

The objective of this curricular unit is the knowledge and understanding of the properties and structure of the foremost classes of biomolecules (sugars, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids), their interactions with the solvent water, and the mechanisms by which they react in a controlled manner in the context of the living cell.

Resultados de aprendizagem e competências

The student should be able to describe the structure and function of proteins, apply methods of isolation and characterization of protein, interpret enzyme kinetic parameters, understand the functions and chemical nature of diverse sugars and lipids, know the components and properties of biological membranes, the structure and characteristics of nucleic acid. He will know the role of ATP, NAD(P)H and FAD in the metabolism, and the major metabolic pathways, being capable of performing bioenergetics calculations.
The student should develop the capacity to relate and integrate all concepts so as to visualize the molecular functioning of the cell as a whole.

Programa

Chapter 1.Introduction to biochemistry. Biodiversity of living organisms vs biochemical uniformity; different types of cells and their característics. Biological functions in aqueous system

Chapter2. Biomolecules: aminoacids and peptides: properties; Properties, function and structure of proteins; methods of isolation, purification and quantification of proteins; Enzymes – reaction mechanism and kinetics; Structure and function of lipids, biological membranes – composition, function and transport systems. Nucleic acids and nucleotides – structure, properties, role. Genetic information flux – replication, transcription and translation. Recombinant DNA technology. Structure and function of sugars.

Chapter 3.Bioenergetics and metabolism: fundaments of bioenergetic, metabolic pathway, catabolism and anabolism. Glycolisis, tricarcoxylic acid cycle, pentose phosphate pathway, respiratory chain, betaoxidation of fatty acids, degradation of amino acids for energy gain, urea cycle.

Métodos de ensino e atividades de aprendizagem

The theoretical component will be presented in expository mode using Powerpoint slides. The integration of concepts will be carried out through the resolution of practical exercises and case studies, interspersed with the expository method whenever possible.

Fórmula de cálculo da classificação final

Continuous Assessment:

FC= 75% (average of 3 tests) + 20%  (case studies) + 5% (presential participation)
Minimum classification of 9.0 for average of testes.

Exam:

FC= 100 % Exam OR 75% Exam + 20%  (case studies) + 5% (presential participation) OR 75% Exam + 20%  (case studies) – best classification of 2 options.

Minimum classification of 9.0 for exam.

Provas e trabalhos especiais

The presential participation is evaluated as active presence in class.

Case-studies are the realization of small case-studies and/or small works of knowledge application, to be elaborated in groups or individually. Each case-study is presented in class, contextualized in the contents under study and a deadline appropriate to the required effort is given (extendable whenever students (from any of the courses) report that there is an overlap with situations of great intensity of moments of evaluation of other UCs).

Avaliação especial (TE, DA, ...)

There is no provision for any special assessment regime, not included in those already provided for in the Regulation.
For working-students, unable to attend classes (participation) and deliver the case studies, the continuous evaluation may be done solely by average of tests.
