Objetivos

The purpose of this curricular unit is in-depth knowledge of the operation mode of the various biological reactors, allowing the study of the mass transfer phenomena and design of agitation systems in fermentation broths. It is thus intended that students acquire knowledge about: the various operation modes of biological reactors and application of mass and energy balances for each type of reactor, the phenomena underlying the mixing and stirring of fermentation broths, sterilization and sizing criteria.

Resultados de aprendizagem e competências

This UC aims to approach the concepts necessary for the design and scaling of biological reactors.

Métodos de ensino e atividades de aprendizagem

The lecture method-with student intervention, adopted for the lectures is appropriate for the presentation of the content covered in the curricular unit. The exercises solved in practical classes serve to help understand some concepts that may be difficult to understand in the  theoretical exposition. The written tests during the semester allow students to consolidate the knowledge acquired in stages during the course classes. In addition, it is also intended to foster critical thinking and reflection, so classes are taught in the form of a conversation with students.

Fórmula de cálculo da classificação final

Continuous Assessment: 75% x average of 2 tests + 20% Group Work+ 5% assessment in classroom

Assessment 1st / 2nd season and Special Season: 80% x Exam + 20% Group work OR 100% Exam - the best option will be chosen

No minimum grade in individual components of the evaluation.
For the continuous assessment, the evaluation components are mandatory.

Exam 100%

Observações

The continuous assessment includes a group work on applications of bioreactors, selected from a set of proposed topics. Other topics that fit within the context of the operation and sizing of bioreactors and fall within the scope of the course objectives may be proposed.
The work is based on bibliographic research in scientific articles and books on the topic assigned to the group.
At the end, the work is presented with powerpoint support, with time for further discussion and questions. The written work may be in Portuguese or English but is presented in English. It will also include questions about the work presented for the colleagues. A different grade can be assigned to each member of the group according to the presentation and mastery of the topic.
To students that sign the written work but do not present it, a grade will be given to the written component (corresponding to a weight of 40% of the work).
The assessment in classroom includes submiting selected exercises, questions or case-studies presented in classroom and solved individually or in a group by the students.
